Artist's Comments

A speed painting, because dammit I've been wanting to draw for a while now and just can't either get myself to or make the time.

Photoshop, wacom tablet, probably a couple of hours total not counting stopping to get nachos and watch M*A*S*H

I dunno what kind of plane it is, I just pooped something out onto the screen without a reference. Maybe someday I'll go back and use like... a real plane. :P ... haha "someday".

weird, I wonder how many people dream about things like that?

I frequently have dreams of being stuck flying a small single-engine plane by myself (which I've done all of three times) so that once I'm up in the air, I know exactly where I need to go but not how to get there. And I'm always running out of gas and trying to find somewhere to land. >.o; it's pretty nerve wracking but at least none of those dreams ever have me going down in flames lol

In that situation, stabelize the plane as much as you can, then try to air out the cabin, then pick up as much speed as you can so you can continue to glide (nose down a tad) and look for a good emergency landing place.

Of course, if there's that much smoke from the cabin, it's doubtful the pilot survived...ouch.

Amazing, if somewhat creepy painting.

Ok strengths in particular:

The palette just sings--it may be something I already know, but it is still amazing to see someone juxtapose both alizarins and more muddy warm earth reds with an essentially green palette. Most people don't realize, even accomplished artists, that very unexpected color patches exist in what the mind perceives to be more basic. There ARE subdued greens and browns in a scene of a plane divebombing from a cloud of smoke or water vapor. We just need the artist to convey that subtle palette that exists but is rarely observed in reality. In this sense you're sort of like an impressionist in your optical goals and strategies, but with a more Rembrandt-esque, subdued, earthy palette. I applaud you for being brave enough to juxtapose high saturation and muddier colors to the better ennunciation of each.

Your use of edge also continues to be just delicious lol. Everything is evanescent except for that plane front, viewer's left wing, and propeller which just insistently slice out into our space. It creates a confrontational and menacing overtone for the viewer, almost like you are embodying the actual SOUND of a plane approaching and getting louder and higher, like a Doppler Effect put to the visual or something.

Conceptually there is a sense of hopelessness to the work, yet also a sense of ....weird beauty in the relinquishing to death of the plane's inhabitants. It reminds me very much of some kind of manic high, where even when you're on your way to a self-destructive path, you are doing so with a sort of angry too-bright joy....so as Obi said, a creepy yet amazing image. Interestingly, something about it makes me feel like I'm choking. So I am vicariously experiencing what the passengers must be experiencing. I wonder if this is in some ways a self-portrait of how you're feeling right now.

That's interesting...I just realized how your engineering/scientific/inquisitive side shines in your artistic style. There is always something intricate and precise about your works...little intimate details are fussed over and the drawings themselves tend to often be small and introspective, very much like some sort of empirical scientific study. At the same time there's a whimsey that keeps your works from ever being too stilted and stiff.

That all just puked out onto the keyboard bc I have to run, but wanted to seize the moment to tell you about what I love in it.
